TURNING A BOWL

NOW THAT I HAVE CREATED A ROUGH BOWL BLANK, I BEGIN TO SHAPE THE BOWL, STARTING WITH THE OUTSIDE SURFACE.

THE BLANK IS MOUNTED ON THE HEADSTOCK OF THE LATHE WITH A CHUCK. THE TAILSTOCK IS MOVED FROM THE RIGHT TO FURTHER SUPPORT THE BOWL BLANK.

THE OUTSIDE SURFACE OF THE BOWL IS SHAPED, USING BOTH A BOWL GOUGE AND WOOD SCRAPERS. I FINISH THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOWL UNTIL IT'S READY TO BE FINISHED WITH SANDPAPER.

A TENON IS ALSO CREATED, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO TURN THE BOWL AROUND AND ATTACH IT TO THE HEADSTOCK ON THE LEFT.

THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS! THE BOWL BEGINS TO EMERGE AS LAYER AFTER LAYER IS REMOVED. IT'S FASCINATING TO SEE HOW THE CHARACTER, GRAIN, AND FIGURE ARE REVEALED! WHEN I REACH THE DESIRED THICKNESS, IT'S TIME TO SAND, REMOVE THE TENON, AND TREAT IT WITH A NATURAL FINISH.
