EMBELLISHED BOWLS

I USE THE TERM "EMBELLISHED" LOOSELY, REFERRING TO BOWLS THAT HAVE BEEN DECORATED IN VARIOUS WAYS.

YOU WILL FIND A VARIETY OF BOWLS ON THIS PAGE THAT HAVE BEEN EMBELLISHED WITH OTHER FINISHES AND TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING:

  • WATER-BASED GLOSSY SHELLAC  (WHICH IS ALSO FOOD-SAFE)

  • MILK PAINT (PRIMARILY BLACK)

  • RIMS OF VARIOUS WIDTHS

  • PYROGRAPHY (WOOD BURNING), OFTEN SPORTING GEOMETRIC SHAPES

SOME BOWLS INCORPORATE ALL FOUR!

SOME WOOD SPECIES LEND THEMSELVES MORE READILY TO EMBELLISHMENT, PARTICULARLY THOSE THAT ARE NOT HIGHLY FIGURED OR ARE WITHOUT A PROMINENT GRAIN. THEY ARE, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER;

  • BIRCH (WITHOUT SPALTING)

  • HACKBERRY, A TYPE OF ELM, THAT IS AVAILABLE IN SOUTHERN MINNESOTA

  • PEAR

  • BUTTERNUT, RELATED TO BLACK WALNUT (IT IS SOMETIMES CALLED WHITE WALNUT)
